When people talk about needing a root canal done, they mean a
. A root canal is the part of the tooth beneath the hard enamel and dentin that extends down from the pulp (core of the tooth) and houses nerves, blood vessels, and pulp tissueA root canal is needed when the pulp has been infected, usually due to erosion of the enamel and dentin or from a crack/chip in the tooth. This procedure stops the bacteria from spreading in your tooth and prevents it from infecting other parts of your body.
Roots canals are also performed to relieve someone of a dental abscess which can look like a pimple sticking out of your gums. A
is caused by a bacterial infection that causes the accumulation of pus at the tooth root. They may pop on their own, but you still need to see a dentist because now the bacteria can spread easier and infect other body parts.Root Canal Procedure
The root canal procedure starts with taking x-rays of the affected area to identify the condition of your tooth. Second the affected tooth and area is numbed to prevent you from feeling any pain. At this point you may feel some pressure or a pinch, but this is only the injection of the anesthetic.
Our dentist will then open the top of the infected tooth with a specialized drill. Then using other small tools they will remove all the infected pulp. The tooth cavity and root canals are cleaned and disinfected to remove all bacteria and other debris. The last step is to seal off the root canal and fit your tooth for a dental crown to protect your tooth from re-infection.
